What Is The Pinewood Derby?
The Pinewood Derby is an annual racing event held by the Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America.  Each scout constructs a car from a block of wood.  Parents/Guardians assist the Scout in the creation of the car.  Race day is full of fun and excitement.  The Pinewood Derby teaches the scouts craftsmanship, patience, and good sportsmanship.

Basic Car Dimension/Weight Regulations
  • The overall length of the car cannot be longer than 7 inches
  • The overall width of the car cannot be thicker than 2 3/4 inches
  • There must be a wheel clearance of 1 3/4 inches between wheels
  • There must be a 3/8 inch underside clearance 
  • The derby car cannot exceed 5.0 ounces on the official scale

Car Modifications

  • The official Pinewood Derby kit MUST be used but the car can be designed in any way
  • Official BSA wheels must be used.  They can be colored BSA wheels. 
  • Graphite will be placed on the wheels by Race Staff

Other Info

  • Once inspected and passed, only Race Staff can handle the car
  • Repairs can be made in event of damage during the race
  • Each car must be inspected before racing
  • Every scout will show good sportsmanship
  • Cars must be constructed after February 1st of the previous year
